Improved small ruminant value chains in Ethiopia focus of new Livestock and Fish project
In April this year, the International Fund for Agricultural Development agreed to co-finance a three year project to improve the performance of pro-poor sheep and goat value chains for enhanced livelihoods, food and nutrition security in Ethiopia. The project is led by the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) with contributions from the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) and the Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research (EIAR). Uganda pig feed trials show benefits of local feed solutions
As part of a research intervention aimed at alleviating the feed crunch for Uganda’s smallholder pig producers, the University of Guelph’s Department of Population Medicine, in partnership with ILRI, tested novel pig diets using locally available crop residues and feedstuffs to determine the difference (if any) in the average daily gain in weight of pigs fed on a silage-based ration, or a ration using local feedstuffs and if these differ from ADG of pigs fed commercial feed. Adapting and adopting improved animal feeding systems in Southeast Asia
Until recently, livestock husbandry in Vietnam’s Central Highlands was not very productive. Animals were intermittently sold to free-up cash to put towards weddings or large purchases, and the rest of the time they were left free to graze on native pasture and crop residues. To help revitalize these livestock systems, researchers at CIAT have been … Continue reading
Smallholder pigs value chain project to increase rural incomes in Uganda
Over the past three decades pig production has become an increasingly important activity in Uganda, as indicated by the increase in pig population from 0.19 to 2.3 million. In 2011, Uganda had the highest per capita consumption of pork meat in Sub-Saharan Africa (3.4 kg/person/year). Pigs in Uganda are mainly kept by women as backyard … Continue reading

The project is implemented by CIAT with support from ILRI. It focuses on improving … Continue reading
Smallholder dairy the focus of Livestock and Fish Research Program meetings in Tanzania
Dairying offers opportunities for rural livelihoods and nutritional security, particularly in societies already having a tradition of cattle-keeping. Perhaps uniquely amongst agricultural pathways out of poverty, it offers many pro-poor benefits from small-scale production and marketing. These include opportunities for intensification and enhanced productivity and incomes, employment in services and marketing, and nutrition both for … Continue reading
Enhancing dairy livelihoods in India and Tanzania through feed innovation and value chain development
The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) recently funded a project on feed enhancement for dairy value chains in India and Tanzania. The project will be implemented by ILRI with CIAT as a major partner. We are calling the project MilkIT (Milk in India and Tanzania). The overall goal of the project is to contribute … Continue reading
